The Best Nutritional Supplements are Naturally Occurring

by SHS Contributor on February 22, 2010

Nutritional supplements are something that can help those people who try to eat healthy foods to fill the gaps that may exist in their nutrition due to such factors as local food supplies, financial viability of alternatives, and general taste preferences. Your body needs to get all non-fat soluble nutrients on a relatively regular basis in order to maintain healthy nutrient levels. It is only when your body has a broad range of nutrients that it can use these nutrients to create synergistic health benefits. High doses of single nutrients don’t do anything particularly good for the body and can have detrimental impacts in some situations. The best nutritional supplements are broad enough to contain the ingredients your body needs in order to function well without overdosing you on any particular concentration of an ingredient. The key is to remember that supplements are helpful as a part of a balanced diet, not as a replacement for a balanced diet.

The Natural Difference

One of the problems you’ll have when you go to purchase nutritional supplements are that many of them come as either a particular ingredient concentrate or a synthetic concentrate of any ingredient. Again, your body can’t do much without a balance of nutrients. It is important to note that some synthetic vitamins are so much like the natural version that science cannot distinguish between them. However, in most cases the synthetic version is different from the natural one. For years synthetics were considered to be essentially the same, but now they’re finding some synthetic forms are actually harmful. It should be noted that some natural forms of specific vitamins or minerals are also not as beneficial as other natural forms.

Why do manufacturers make synthetic vitamins? Sometimes because it is less expensive. Sometimes because of limited availability of viable natural products from which to make extractions or limited ability to make extractions. Sometimes the synthetic versions have longer shelf lives than the natural versions. As a consumer, it is hard enough to determine whether natural or synthetic ingredients are used, let alone which is the best alternative in a given case. The safest thing is to go with natural extract multivitamins from a reputable manufacturer.

To some extent you do want to ensure that you’re supplementing the nutrients your body lacks by taking the best nutritional supplements. You can get measures of nutrient levels in your body with a simple blood test, but this isn’t typically necessary. Just getting a well rounded supplement without too high of a concentration of any ingredient is typically sufficient if you’re already eating a balanced diet. If you have a medical condition, such as one that causes low B12 retention then you may need to take special targeted supplements recommended by your doctor.
